Cancel or retry an upload

Start with the file's visible status. A file that is still Processing has transferred but is not ready yet, so give it time before retrying or uploading it again.

Choose the right next step

  • If a file shows This file has failed to upload on Web, or Sync Failed on iPhone, choose Retry. On Web, use the file's row in the Uploads tray. On iPhone, use Retry from the file's inline Sync Failed state.

  • If the file is unsupported, use a supported version of the file instead.

  • If the file is over 5 GB, reduce, split, or export a smaller version, then upload it again.

  • If you see Storage full, make space or upgrade, then start the upload again. Free includes 2 GB of storage; Pro includes 3 TB.

Cancel active uploads

  • On Web, choose Cancel on an active file to stop just that file. Choose Cancel [number] to stop all incomplete files in the current Uploads tray session, then confirm Cancel Uploads.

  • On iPhone, open an active file's menu and choose Cancel. Upload status appears inline on the file; iPhone does not use an Uploads tray.

  • You can cancel a file that is waiting, transferring, or Processing. You cannot cancel a completed or failed upload.

Clean up after a failure

  • On iPhone, choose Delete from a failed file's menu when you no longer need that unfinished local item.

  • On Web, the Uploads tray has no Delete action. Use the normal file actions once a file has completed and appears in its destination.

  • On Web, Upload Complete means the current session has no work still in progress. Check the individual rows for failures, skipped files, or canceled uploads.

Dropbox imports on Web

  • Dropbox uses Importing before Processing. If an import fails or you cancel it, use Retry from its row after you fix the issue.

  • If a Dropbox import is unsupported or over 5 GB, use a supported or smaller replacement. If it is blocked by storage, free space or upgrade before retrying.
